"The Timeless Connection: How Music Connects Generations"
Music is more than just sound; it’s a universal language that resonates with the soul. It engages the senses, stimulates the brain, and has the power to influence mood, memory, emotions, and movement. I believe music is an invisible bond that ties us to the people we love, which is why so many of us cherish songs from multiple eras and genres.
As a Gen Xer, I have a deep appreciation for music that spans generations. Concerts are one of my favorite pastimes, and I’ve had the privilege of seeing a wide variety of legendary artists, from classic rock bands like Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, and Aerosmith; hair metal and hard rock bands like Def Leppard, AC DC, and Metallica; to pop icons such as Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, and even greats like Simon and Garfunkel and Tom Jones. Each performance has added a unique thread to the fabric of my musical journey.
If time travel were possible, I’d jump at the chance to see artists like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, the Rat Pack, Jimi Hendrix, and more modern legends like Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, and George Michael perform live.
My love of music stems from my upbringing by Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation—my grandparents. Music was always a central part of our family life. Road trips turned into sing-alongs, birthday parties were filled with dancing, and even camping trips featured music around the fire.
As a child, our days began with the stereo tuned to CKOC, playing the hits of the 80s. My mom and I often traveled together, singing along to the Beach Boys, Kenny Rogers, CCR, and Elvis. On cross-country trips with my grandparents, the eight-tracks of Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Patsy Cline were constant companions.
Some of my most cherished memories with my mom revolve around music. In 2020, during her cancer treatments, I found comfort in driving with the radio blasting, singing through my emotions on the way to visit her. Even in her final moments, music played softly, creating a connection that words could not.
Music has a unique ability to connect generations, transcending time and space. A familiar song can take us back to a special moment, letting us relive the love and joy we shared with those we’ve lost. It reminds us that even though they may be gone, the bond remains alive in every melody and lyric. Music isn’t just sound—it’s a lifeline to the people and memories that make us who we are.
